2020 worst tornado year in almost a decade


Tornadoes in 2020 claimed 73 lives as of April 24, according to this article citing NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center. The tornadoes have all occurred in eight southern states, with Tennessee and Mississippi having the most. This is the deadliest year for tornadoes in the U.S. since 2011.

Forecasters had predicted that above-average temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico would lead to severe storms across the Deep South and Southeast, with the risk expanding into the Southern Plains and increasing dramatically before swallowing traditional “Tornado Alley” across the central United States by May.

According to Aon Benfield, the United States has recorded five billion-dollar economic loss events resulting from severe convective storms (which include tornadoes) so far in 2020. Insured losses from a March 27-30 outbreak are estimated at $1 billion.

Insurance considerations

While COVID-19 is causing changes in some business practices, the nation’s insurers are open and helping customers who sustained tornado-related damage. Property damage caused by tornadoes is covered under standard homeowners, renters, and business insurance policies, and under the optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy.

The Triple-I has these recommendations when property damage occurs for renters, home and auto owners:

  • Contact your insurance professional and start the claims filing process.
  • Take photos of any damage. A photographic record is useful when making an insurance claim.
  • Make temporary repairs to prevent further loss from rain, wind or looting; these costs are reimbursable under most policies, so save the receipts.
  • Compile a detailed list of all damaged or destroyed personal property.  Do not throw out damaged property until you meet with an insurance adjuster. If you have a home inventory, it will make the claims-filing process easier.
  • Hold off on signing repair contracts. Do your due diligence, deal with reputable contractors, and get references. Be sure of payment terms and consult your insurance adjuster before signing any contracts.
  • Check to see if you’re eligible for additional living expenses (ALE). Standard homeowners and renters insurance policies pay for the extra charges (e.g., temporary housing, restaurant meals) you incur over and above your customary living expenses if your home is uninhabitable because of an insured loss. Save all related receipts and, if you have vacated your home, make sure your insurer knows how to contact you. 

Small Business Owners should follow the same advice as above when it comes to filing a property damage claim.

If your business is forced to close temporarily or relocate because of direct physical damage to its premises, file either a business income (also known as business interruption) or extra expense claim, if you carry these coverages.

Triple-I Employees Share Pet Adoption Stories

April 30 is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day–a day created to raise awareness for the millions of animals waiting in shelters to find their forever homes.

According to the Humane Society, 6-8 million animals enter shelters in the US annually with 28 percent of dogs and 31 percent of cats completing adoptions each year.

Several employees of the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) have also chosen to adopt rather than shop. These four-legged family members are an important part of our lives, and we’d like to share their stories with you in honor of #NationalAdoptAShelterPet day.


Name: Happy  Age: 9 years old

Happy was adopted from a shelter in August 2010. He was the smallest and quietest dog of the bunch. His mom Katrina noticed his big brown eyes, big ears, and cotton bunny-like tail. It was love at first sight. Happy likes to go on walks and will take his leash to “walk himself” out the door. He’s very particular about his squeaky toys and filter water and will insert himself into conversations by “politely” barking.

Name: Mellie  Age: 2 years old

Mellie was a rescue from a puppy mill and was unnamed when adopted by her family. Her dad Scott named her after his paternal grandmother. Mellie is a very curious dog who has a fascination with TV remotes–10 replaced and counting! She loves being around people and shares her home with her older fur brother Maxwell.

Name: Maxwell Age: 4 years

Maxwell was adopted at 10 weeks from a litter of 10 puppies. His dad adopted him from a rescue organization.
Maxwell loves swimming, walking, running, visiting the dog park, and eating treats. He knows exactly where the biscuits are and how to train humans to get what he wants.

Name: Snickers Age: Almost 6 years old

Snickers was adopted by her family around 3 months. She officially turns 6 in June 2020. Snickers appears to be head of household keeping her human family and dog brother in line. No beasts are victorious under her neighborhood watch including birds, hornets, and wasps.

Name: Bauer Age: 8 years old
 

Bauer was a rescue from Nairobi, Kenya and moved to the US with his dad a year after his adoption in 2014. Bauer has a playful personality. He loves lining up his toys and stockpile of biscuits every night before he goes to bed. Bauer is big in size with an even bigger heart.

Name: Bandit Age: Almost 2 years


Bandit was adopted from a shelter at six months old. He was rescued from a private home in 2018 along with 100 other dogs. After nearly two years with his family, Bandit has settled into a routine – greeting his mom Rita when she comes homes from work and cuddling with his human brother before bed. His mom says that, although he was shy at first, Bandit’s found a respected place in his family and is affectionately referred to as the “King of the Castle.”

These are some of the stories of animals who have joined the Triple-I family. We hope these brought joy during these uncertain times. FAQs about COVID-19’s Impact on Workers’ Comp

Dr. John W. Ruser, President and CEO of the Workers’ Compensation Research Institute (WCRI), contributed this Q&A about the role workers’ compensation insurance plays in the coronavirus pandemic.

During this pandemic, many workers (nurses, police, grocery store clerks, transit professionals, etc.) are considered essential, potentially putting them at heightened risk for contracting COVID-19. A key question, of course, is whether a worker who contracts COVID-19 is compensated under workers’ compensation for income loss and medical expenses.

Below are some frequently asked questions that get posed to me as president and CEO of the Workers Compensation Research Institute (WCRI), which is an independent, not-for-profit research organization that provides high-quality, objective research and statistical information about public policy issues involving the various state workers’ compensation insurance systems in the United States.

Q1: Is COVID-19 covered under workers’ compensation and if not, why not?

A1: Historically, communicable diseases, like the flu, have generally not been covered.  Workers’ compensation covers injuries and illnesses that arise out of and in the course of employment. It is generally difficult to establish work-relationship for a disease that could be contracted anywhere. Indeed, some states’ statutes bar compensation for communicable diseases. In the past few weeks, though, a number of states have taken steps to expand workers’ compensation coverage to include COVID-19 for certain groups of workers.

Q2: What is the course of action for states seeking to cover essential workers impacted by COVID-19?

A2: Some states consider that their current laws, regulations and procedures are sufficient to provide compensation for workers who demonstrate that they contracted COVID-19 at work. Other states have changed their rules, either by executive order or by legislation, to increase the likelihood that a worker who contracts COVID-19 may be eligible for workers ’ compensation. The states vary in terms of the scope of workers covered and in terms of the burden of proof required by an ill worker to establish work-relatedness. A number of states’ laws and orders cover only first responders or health care workers. Others expand coverage to include other groups of workers deemed to be essential, e.g., grocery workers. In some states, the worker may be eligible for workers’ compensation if they can demonstrate that their illness was the result of their employment or occupation. In other states, for the workers covered, there is a presumption that their illness arose from work, though that presumption can be rebutted.

Q3: Is this is the first time coverage has been expanded for conditions that may arise outside of work and how are workers’ compensation laws changed?

A3: No, for example, we have seen workers’ compensation coverage expanded to include those, particularly first responders, who witness a traumatic experience and as a result have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and can no longer perform their duties.

Q4: Is workers’ compensation administered at the state or federal level?

A4: Individuals injured on the job while employed by private companies or state and local government agencies are covered by workers’ compensation programs administered by the states. The essential features of the states’ workers’ compensation systems are similar, but they may vary in terms of the compensability of some conditions, the amount of benefits paid and other features. Federal and some other workers are covered by four disability compensation programs administered by the US Department of Labor.

Q5: What does workers’ compensation cover and are the benefits across the country the same?

A5: Workers’ compensation covers all medical benefits and wages lost while off work due to the injury. It covers the first dollar of medical care and there are statutory formulas for the income benefits that replace lost wages. WCRI’s workers’ compensation laws reports are a great resource to identify the similarities and differences across workers’ compensation systems in U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

Q6: Is WCRI working on any research that will help us better understand the impact of COVID-19 on state workers’ compensation systems?

A6: WCRI has a wealth of studies that provide a pre-COVID baseline for evaluating the impact of the virus on workers’ compensation claims. This includes WCRI’s CompScope™ Benchmarks studies, which compare a range of workers’ compensation performance metrics across 18 states. In the future, we will evaluate the impact of the virus on the composition of claims and their costs, how the virus may have affected the delivery of care to injured workers and the impact of that on worker and claims outcomes, including duration of disability.

Insurers Respond to COVID-19 (4/24/2020)

The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF), announced today that it has raised nearly $500,000 in just over 3 weeks through its national fundraising campaign, the COVID-19 Crisis: IICF Children’s Relief Fund.

IICF’s crisis relief campaign enables donors to focus resources on children at risk of food insecurity, educational disruption, family homelessness and other issues exacerbated by COVID-19. With the support of insurance companies, associations and individual industry professionals, funds raised will benefit 14 nonprofit partners operating throughout IICF’s four U.S.-based divisions.

Overall, U.S. insurers and their charitable foundations have donated approximately $220 million in response to the COVID-19 crisis. And well in excess of $100 million has been contributed internationally, according to Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I) estimates based on information collected by IICF.

Insurance industry contributions have gone beyond financial donations, as tracked by IICF. These efforts include:

  • More than 400,000 masks donated to frontline healthcare workers
  • An industrywide commitment to deliver more than 1 million meals to families in need
  • Hosting blood drives
  • Purchasing and donating to healthcare workers gift cards from small businesses
  • Offering no-cost life insurance policies to frontline healthcare workers
  • Providing additional time off to volunteer in the community
  • Increased matching of employee donations to local charities

In addition, insurance companies have made commitments not to furlough workers due to the pandemic. And U.S. auto insurers will return more than $10.5 billion to their customers nationwide as part of their COVID-19 response, Triple-I estimates.

Insurers Respond to COVID-19 (4/17/2020)

Auto insurance refunds

U.S. auto insurers will return more than $10 billion to their customers nationwide, according to an estimate released on April 11 by the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I).

We’ve listed many of the companies that are offering refunds in a previous post.  This week, several other auto insurers have announced refunds or credits. This is not an exhaustive list, so be sure to check with your insurer to see if they are offering refunds or credits. All premium and rate adjustments are subject to regulatory approval.

Chubb‘s auto insurance clients will receive a credit reflecting a 35% premium reduction for the months of April and May, with additional discounts for subsequent months, as the situation warrants, upon renewal. Across Chubb’s portfolio, the average credit is expected to be $110 per vehicle.

COUNTRY Financial announced that every client with a personal auto insurance policy as of April 1, 2020 will receive a 15% refund for two months of auto premium in anticipation of a decrease in driving activity in April and May.

CSAA Insurance Group is giving a 20 percent refund for two months of auto premiums, March and April 2020.

ERIE has announced that lowering personal and commercial auto rates would be the best option for providing additional relief to customers. The company estimates the total rate reduction impact to be approximately $200 million throughout the 12 states and District of Columbia where ERIE operates.

Ohio Mutual Insurance Group is offering personal auto premium credits on more than 80,000 personal auto policies for an estimated total of $6 million. Ohio Mutual is voluntarily providing a 25% personal auto premium credit that applies to an 11-week period (March 16 – May 31, 2020) for all policies in-force on May 31. Credits will be automatically applied to customers’ first invoice after June 1. Those with a balance less than the credit will receive a refund by check.

The Hanover Insurance Group announced it has created The Hanover CARES Refund, through which the company will return 15% of April and May auto premiums to its eligible personal lines customers, providing financial relief during the coronavirus pandemic.

MAPFRE Insurance announced its Staying Home Refund program, which will return 15 percent of April and May premium to its voluntary personal auto policyholders in Massachusetts, totaling over $30 million. On average, most policyholders will receive a credit of approximately $40.00. A similar credit will be provided to the company’s personal auto policyholders in its other states of operation for the same time period.

Westfield announced a 15 percent policy credit to their eligible personal auto insurance customers for three months.

Supporting communities

Chubb has announced a support program designed to help ease the financial burden of the COVID-19 pandemic on its small business clients in the United States and provide direct support to healthcare workers and other front-line responders.

Chubb’s U.S. small business clients whose policies renew between April 1 and August 1, 2020 will receive an automatic 25% reduction in the sales and payroll exposures used to calculate their premium as well as a 15% reduction in premiums for their commercial auto insurance. In addition, Chubb will purchase $1 million in gift cards from small business clients around the country, which will be donated to healthcare workers and other first responders on the front lines of the pandemic in their communities.

Fundación MAPFRE, a global nonprofit foundation created by MAPFRE, announced it will donate $2.3 million to support urgent medical and community needs across Massachusetts, as the coronavirus continues to spread. The funding is part of a global $38 million aid package by the foundation for medical providers and communities around the world.

Hanover announced customer relief measures and a commitment to contribute $500,000 to nonprofits in local communities to address needs arising from the public health crisis.

State Farm has donated $1 million and partnered with Salesforce to provide one million masks and other protective equipment to healthcare workers in areas of urgent need identified by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). Since the start of COVID-19, State Farm has provided about $5 million in neighborhood relief across the country.

Swiss Re Group pledged to donate CHF 5 million to support the needs of people and communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic around the world. Through its non-profit grant foundation, the Swiss Re Foundation, the funds will be distributed to organizations tackling the crisis, particularly in developing countries.

The Westfield Insurance Foundation is helping communities in Northeast Ohio and across the country by donating nearly $1.5 million dollars to nonprofit partners focused on family stability and disaster recovery. These dollars will help stabilize communities and help those who need economic support. 

Dog Bite Prevention Coalition: Tips for Sheltering at Home with Pets

Most Americans are under stay-a-home orders at this stage of the coronavirus pandemic, and stress is running high for myriad reasons.

The pandemic has affected pets too. “Dogs that are used to kids being at school and adults at work are now finding themselves surrounded by their families 24/7,” according to Victoria Stilwell, CEO of Positively.com and the Victoria Stilwell Academy of Dog Training and Behavior. “Most welcome the company, but some dogs are having a hard time adjusting to the constant noise, attention and lack of space,” said Stilwell.

In some cases, dogs will exhibit anxious, aggressive, or destructive behaviors.

The National Dog Bite Prevention Week Coalition offers the following tips to help you and your pets cope while sheltering at home:

  • Create a den-like space or “safe zone” in your home that is a “dog only” zone. This can be a crate where the door always remains open or a quiet location your dog can go to when it needs some space.
  • Small children should be supervised around any dog. To make it easier, you can use baby gates to keep dogs and kids separated if you can’t actively supervise them.
  • This is the time to teach your dog some new skills. Challenge your dog to learn new cues. If you need the help of a trainer, many now offer virtual consultations.
  • If you can take your dog out for a walk, make sure you keep it on leash. Do not allow your pet to socially interact with other dogs or people. While humans are observing social distancing rules, they should help their dogs do the same.
  • Having a plan in place for your pets is important. Individuals who become too sick or require hospitalization will need to have someone to take care of their animals while they heal. Just like any disaster preparedness plan, have a “bug out” bag ready.

Members of the National Dog Bite Prevention Week Coalition will share information during several webinars this week focused on how COVID-19 is impacting pets and pet owners. Experts will provide safety tips for sheltering at home with dogs, how to support animal shelters and rescues, and release 2019 dog-related injury claims data.

In a previously recorded webinar, Janet Ruiz, Strategic Communications Director, Triple-I, explained that when it comes to dog bite claims, it’s important to note that these are just incidents that were reported to insurance companies and that the actual number of dog bites is likely to be much higher.  In 2019 homeowners insurers paid about $796.8 million as a result of 17,802 dog bite claims.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week (NDBPW) is April 12-18, 2020. Members of the National Dog Bite Prevention Coalition include the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), State Farm®, Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I), American Humane, and the Victoria Stilwell Academy for Dog Training and Behavior. The coalition joins forces each year to draw attention to how people can reduce the number of dog bites.

Litigation during the coronavirus pandemic

The coronavirus crisis is taking a toll on the U.S. legal system as courts are restricting access and altering procedures. Dentons, a global law firm, addressed  the impact of COVID-19  on ongoing cases in a recent webinar led by Michael Duvall, Partner; David Quam, Counsel; and Kelly Graf, Managing Associate.

Litigators have ongoing responsibilities to their clients to keep up with key deadlines, during the “slowdown.” These responsibilities include keeping them informed of scheduling, continuing to meet filing deadlines, and advocating for the clients’ interests. Judges have significant discretion to keep their cases moving along.

The webinar covered some of the litigation risk facing businesses with “enterprising” plaintiff’s lawyers actively looking for clients. The risks include data breaches arising from remote workers using unsecured home computers to access confidential data; safety and compliance issues related to remote work; exposure to the virus by employees who are not working remotely; event cancellation; claims of false or misleading advertising against companies capitalizing on demand for products like  hand sanitizer; and price gouging.

Dentons has put together a 50-state tracker that it’s maintaining of coronavirus-related orders, directives, financial assistance, health and business directives, and updates on court and legislative sessions.

Triple-I: U.S. Auto Insurers to Return $10.5 Billion to Customers

U.S. auto insurers will return more than $10 billion to their customers nationwide, according to an estimate released on April 11 by the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I).

“Insurers are again fulfilling their role as economic first responders by providing financial relief to customers when they need it most,” said Sean Kevelighan, CEO, Triple-I. “If the rest of the nation’s private-passenger auto insurers are as generous as the companies the Triple-I knows about, we project insurers will be giving customer refunds, discounts, dividends, and credits totaling $10.5 billion.”

The Triple-I’s $10.5 billion estimate is based on its analysis of 14 U.S. auto insurers who announced this week premium refunds, discounts, dividends, and credits totaling $8.1 billion.  These insurers cited reduced policyholder mileage and the receipt of fewer claims amid the COVID-19 crisis as the reasons they were able to make these decisions.

Given there are hundreds of companies that sell private-passenger auto insurance in the U.S., the Triple-I looked at the industry’s cumulative market share and estimated an additional $2.4 billion in refunds, discounts, dividends and credits were forthcoming. The Triple-I has updated its Fact Sheet, Insurers Offer Forward-Looking Solutions For COVID-19 Recovery, to reflect the latest steps taken by the nation’s auto insurers.

“These are challenging financial times for millions of Americans, and the country’s auto insurers are making it easier for their customers to get through this extraordinary time in U.S. history,” Kevelighan stated.

The Triple-I estimates the typical U.S. auto insurance customer spent $1,113 in 2019 to cover a single private-passenger vehicle. 

Insurers Respond to COVID-19 Wrap-Up (4/10/2020)

Auto insurance refunds

Auto insurers are giving refunds to their customers as people are driving less due to coronavirus shut-downs. No action is required by customers to receive credit in most cases, but Sean Kevelighan, Triple-I CEO, urged customer to reach out to their insurers. “We always recommend the customer contact the insurer and explain their individual situations. Insurers are always happy to look at individual situations and work with the customer,” he said in a Weather Channel interview.

Here are the refunds some of the major auto insurers are offering:

Allstate customers will get “Shelter-In Place Paybacks,” adding up to $600 million over the next two months. “This is fair because less driving means fewer accidents,” Tom Wilson, the company’s chair, president and chief executive officer said in a statement.

American Family will return approximately $200 million to its auto insurance customers.

Farmers auto customers will receive a 25 percent reduction in their April premiums. “We are committed to helping customers during this unprecedented time,” said Jeff Dailey, the company’s CEO. “As we continue receiving updated information in the coming weeks, we’ll assess additional ways to take care of our customers.”

The Hanover Insurance Group will return 15% of April and May auto premiums to its eligible personal lines customers. The company also announced additional customer relief measures and a commitment to contribute $500,000 to nonprofits in local communities to address needs arising from the public health crisis.

The Hartford announced its COVID-19 Personal Auto Payback Plan, which will provide customers with a 15 percent refund on their April and May personal auto insurance premiums. Over the next two months, the company will distribute approximately $50 million to its customers.

Liberty Mutual will return approximately $250 million to customers. Personal auto insurance customers will receive a 15 percent refund on two months of their auto premium.

MetLife Auto & Home customers will receive a 15% credit for April and May based on their monthly premiums. The company is also extending coverage under all personal auto insurance programs at no additional charge while customers are making deliveries in response to the crisis, effective March 20, 2020, through May 1, 2020. Additionally, MetLife Auto & Home is offering identity protection coverage to its customers.

Nationwide is giving a one-time premium refund of $50 per policy for personal auto policies active as of March 31, 2020.

State Farm announced an up to a $2 billion dividend that will go to its auto insurance customers. Customers do not need to take any action to receive this dividend, which will appear as a credit on their auto policy. On average, State Farm Mutual auto customers can expect to receive a credit of about 25 percent of premium for the time period March 20 through May 31; exact percentages will vary by state.

The Travelers Companies is giving U.S. personal auto insurance customers a 15 percent credit on their April and May premiums. Travelers will continue to assess the program as more information comes to light about the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the driving environment and auto claims.

USAA is set to return $520 million to its members for driving less during the COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders. The company said in a statement that the payment is a result of data showing members driving less during the “Stay Home, Work Safe” orders across the country.

IICF’s Children’s Relief Fund

The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) has launched a national industry-wide fundraising campaign to benefit vulnerable children. Funds raised through the COVID-19 Crisis: IICF Children’s Relief Fund will help support children at risk of food insecurity, educational disruption, family homelessness and other circumstances exacerbated by the crisis. The Allstate Foundation

The Allstate Foundation together with Allstate employees and agency force members, will donate resources across the nation to support communities during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Foundation is contributing $5 million to accelerate relief and recovery for domestic violence victims, youth in need, first responders and communities at large.

“It’s incredibly inspiring to see people finding ways to take care of each other,” said Elizabeth Brady, Allstate chief marketing, customer and communications officer and trustee of The Allstate Foundation. “For 68 years, The Allstate Foundation has delivered on Allstate’s promise to serve as the Good Hands – especially in a moment of need.”

The Nationwide Foundation

The Nationwide Foundation is making $5 million in contributions to local and national charities to support medical and economic response efforts.
